Super friendly service and the best pulled pork sandwich I've ever had! Doesn't break the bank either definitely worth the stop!

First things first The staff is wonderful! So nice and friendly. The food, however, leaves much to the imagination. :( We were SO disappointed after our meal here. The meat tasted very much like it had been sitting in a crock pot for most of the day, even though it was only 2pm, as it was dry and flavorless. The french fries were super good though. I would not recommend this place for someone who is looking for true Kansas City BBQ, as it's more of a general, home made type.

After a day of exploring west-central Missouri, I opted for a rural, bbq outpost. This was my 2nd time at BCBBQ, and I reckon there was barely enough room in that town for the both of us. The prices are right. Seriously, if want to know how much BBQ cost in 1994, go eat at BCBBQ in 2011. Truce to most BBQ joints in KC, service and decor is no-frills, though cordial. Meat is about as good as you made the best time you smoked meat. Savvy? Why did you need a triple bypass? The fries. Why did say it was worth it? The fries.

I was taken to visit this amazing BBQ classic some years back. In a hung over daze some friends from KC attempted to explain burnt ends and couldn't seem to do them justice. In an effort to quell my doubts, they drove my wife and I several miles east of KC off of the highway. Little did I know as we stepped into the haze of smoke and history, this little shack would forever change the way I look at BBQ and life in general. Fast forward 3 yrs and I still have dreams of the smoky burnt ends and fall off the bone ribs. When my wife and I planned our 2 yr old's birthday trip to a KC water park, my mind automatically took me back to the first time I tasted the amazing meat at Bates City BBQ. Many times since, I've tried burnt ends and no one has yet to match the quality and flavor. Even the high priced over marketed chains that claim to have mastered this smoky burnt meat, can't compare to this family run classic. Given the opportunity, I would setup a tent on the adjacent lot just to smell the sweet smoke and wash dishes to only be paid in burnt ends and ribs. The brisket is pretty darn tasty as well.

On our way back from Colorado Springs to St Louis, we really did not want to extend the trip enough to go into KC for one of the classic places so were looking for something along I-70. Not far east of KC we stopped at Bates City BBQ and had a decent experience. We were greeted by a wonderful smoky smell when we arrived. I am always suspicious of barbecue places that don't smell of smoke. This is a simple, home town place, not fancy, no frills. That is just fine with me. We were not trying to get fat at one meal, so just had a short end slab of ribs and a turkey sandwich. I kind of wished I had ordered some burnt ends and beef by the pound to take home just to sample. Ms T's turkey sandwich appeared to be sliced from a smoked turkey roll. Before you tune out, it was actually not bad. It was very smoky and nicely moist. It was really a very good sandwich even though it sounds like deli meat. The ribs are simple, honest, purist spare ribs; untrimmed which is why I ordered the more expensive short end. I prefer the rib meat over the flap meat with its little gristly immature bones. Also the cap muscle on spare ribs can be chewy and there is less of it on the short end. I expected the ribs to be smothered in super sweet KC sauce, but they were served naked with sauce on the tables. I ate mine as always, just as they came out of the pit as God intended. Their sauce, however is not super sweet. It was similar to a lot of Memphis sauces with a balance of sweet and sour, leaning to the tart side, but more tomatoey. They were smoky, tender, not dry and had good pork flavor. We have not yet made a tour of KC barbecue (shame on us, what with living so close) so don't have a lot to compare. These had pretty much no rub. I described them as purist ribs and that is because they are untrimmed spare ribs and are smoked nearly unseasoned. I would say 3-1/2 stars for these ribs. I would prefer a little rub. I don't want to judge these against Memphis until I have eaten at a few dozen KC places. Then I can draw some conclusions regarding style preferences. Would I stop again? Absolutely, if driving by at the right time of day. It is only 1/2 mile off I-70. Is it the best in the KC area? Doubtful, but it beats McDonalds and for not much more money.

Visited Bates City BBQ for the first time last week with some co-workers. Apparently it's been around for a while and now I know why. Amazeballs! It's dive-y but germaphobics won't be skeezed out. It is clean. A couple of nice ladies behind the counter gladly answered my dumb questions about the food. Pretty simple menu, sandwiches, meats, ribs, a few choices of sides. I had a burnt end sandwich with cole slaw. Loved the meat SO much. Perfect burnt ends that were smokey and chewy just like they should be. The cole slaw could have been creamier but the flavor was good. Portions were generous and I took half mine home to enjoy again for dinner. My co-workers had a rib sandwich with cole slaw, a beef sandwich with fries and a pork sandwich with baked beans. We all sampled everyone else's plate. I was jealous of the baked beans. They were tangy and sweet, had a little kick. Fries were pretty good. Made with real potatoes and not seasoned - BONUS. Seasoned fries drive me cray cray. The sauce is thick-ish and also sweet and tangy with a spicy hint. Not hot but not mild. Kind of an everysauce. Will definitely go back and next time I'm ordering the beans instead of the slaw. Wish there was another location a little closer to home but sometimes it's nice to get out of town for an afternoon.

Nice home town BBQ. The smokey aroma of a typical BBQ joint bleeds through the vents of your vehicle when you pull into the parking lot. In my opinion that's the sign of a good BBQ place. The fries are awesome, and with the BBQ sauce one table you you could easily make a meal outta them. Burnt end sandwich is probably better choice though. However it does come with two pieces of white bread, while their other sandwiches come on a sesame bun. Their food is well priced compared to other BBQ places I've been too.

Cheap tables and chairs. Styrofome cups. Dimly lit by flourescent lights. A surrendering smell of smoked meats. Delicious sandwiches and burnt ends. The fries used to be better when they were a greasy hunk of shoestring potato slivers, and they microwave the sandwiches to warm them up. But other than that, wonderful.
